Dressmaking and Fashion Design Course 2 Entry Requirements
You will need foundation fashion design and dressmaking skills before starting this course. This can be achieved by enrolling on our Fashion Design and Dressmaking – course 1, unless you have equivalent experience.

What you will learn on this Dressmaking and Fashion Design course
Lesson 1 – Tools and Equipment – Beyond the Basics
Explore advanced sewing tools and machine attachments to expand your dressmaking capabilities.
Lesson 2 – Fabrics
Learn techniques for working with delicate and textured fabrics like silks, sheers, and piles, using appropriate seams and hems.
Lesson 3 – Seams
Discover decorative seam finishes including top-stitched, welt, and slot seams for stylish detailing.
Lesson 4 – Closings and Fastenings
Master decorative fastenings such as piped buttonholes, lacing, rouleaux, frog closures, and feature zips.
Lesson 5 – Pockets
Create eye-catching pocket styles, including shaped patch, jetted, and flapped designs.
Lesson 6 – Controlling Fullness
Enhance garment shape with pleats, pressed pleats, soft pleats, and skirt vents.
Lesson 7 – Embellishing Fabric
Add texture and interest with tucks, couching, lace, ribbons, and decorative stitching.
Lesson 8 – Painting and Colouring Fabric
Experiment with fabric surface design using techniques like tie-dye, block printing, silk painting, and transfer crayons.
Lesson 9 – Fashion Design Drawing
Develop your fashion sketching skills by recording ideas, using templates, and adding detailed colour drawings.
Lesson 10 – Introduction to Pattern Cutting
Get started with pattern cutting by learning to take accurate measurements and use essential tools.
Lesson 11 – Making up a Toile
Create a toile (mock-up garment) to test your pattern before cutting into final fabric.
Lesson 12 – Pattern Cutting 1 – Camisole Top
Draft and construct a simple camisole top from your own pattern.
Lesson 13 – Pattern Cutting 2 – Straight Skirt
Cut and assemble a basic straight skirt pattern.
Lesson 14 – Pattern Cutting 3 – 6-Panelled (Gored) Skirt
Design and make a six-panelled skirt to learn advanced shaping techniques.
Lesson 15 – Pattern Cutting 4 – Casual Trousers
Create a trouser pattern from scratch and construct a wearable toile.
Lesson 16 – Pattern Cutting 5 – Shirt Blouse
Draft and assemble a classic shirt blouse, incorporating key garment features.
Lesson 17 – In Conclusion
Reflect on your progress and explore next steps in your dressmaking journey.
How Our Courses Works
Your first course materials will be sent to you when you enrol so you can start as soon as you want. You can then enjoy your course at your own pace, studying when it suits you and where it’s most comfortable. This gives you the freedom to learn around your existing job, family or other commitments or location (including overseas).
Course materials have been developed by experts and are clear and straightforward so your studying is easy and enjoyable.
All coursework assignments are included within your course. As you complete each assignment, simply send it to your tutor, who will mark and return it along with valuable, constructive feedback to help progress your skills further. (You can also contact your tutor or the support team for help at any point during your studies.) The remaining course materials will be sent to you as each assignment is completed.
After successfully completing all your assignments, you will be awarded the Regent Academy Diploma.
Study Length
There are no deadlines for this course. Simply study in the comfort of your own home and in your own time.
Your progress will depend upon how much time you’re able to commit to study. However, as a guide, most students tend to complete this course in approximately 6-10 months*.
